BLOOD SIMPLE - JOEL COEN (1984)

Blood-Simple-BW.jpg

The owner of a seedy small-town Texas bar discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife. A chaotic chain of misunderstandings, lies and mischief ensues after he devises a plot to have them murdered.

The early 1980s was not a good time to start making films in Hollywood. It was the year Francis Ford Coppola bombed with One from the Heart and the year after Michael Cimino had brought down United Artists with Heaven’s Gate. It was also the year two brothers wrote a screenplay. They persuaded a friend, Sam Raimi, who had made the slasher Evil Dead, to help them make a two minute trailer – the one you saw last week – which showed "a man dragging a shovel alongside a car stopped in the middle of the road, back towards another man he was going to kill". They took the script and the trailer round their home town Minneapolis and scraped together $1.5 million from, they later said, a lot of “doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs” (which is why we like it). The rest, as they say, is history. They were the Joel and Ethan Coen and since then their films have won 7 Academy Awards, 7 BAFTAs and 3 Golden Globes. But this is still one the best.'

We are showing a restored DIrector’s cut version of this movie and the print looks awesome!
